Old Friends

Writer's picture: JF BierleinJF Bierlein

I had the pleasure of a visit from old friends.

I can call them that because I am old

And now they are too.

We all knew each other when we were young and incomplete

Think of wine that has just started to fizz and ferment

Sometimes bubbling up wildly

Sometimes just fizzing as if seething to be something.

The fermentation subsided gradually

And stable wine was able to mature

Deepen, mellow, develop

Texture, depth, warmth, and subtlety

To develop a unique and rich texture.

Well, the wine of friendship improves with age

And we know this because now we can afford decent wine

To drink with our friends.

The dominant bouquet of old friendship

Has elements of oak, survival, and love.
