New Year

Writer's picture: JF BierleinJF Bierlein

Threw out one calendar

Hung up a new one.

Put a sticky note on my desk

To remind me to date things with the new year.

I forgive everyone for anything they did to me last year

And I suppose I am even doing some forgiving in advance.

Including myself, since I hope to improve.

I am thankful for another year and all that I have,

Which is more than I need.

My holiday waistline is proof of that

Prayed for peace.

Remembered that for some,

A new calendar doesn’t banish need or fear.

Then I reached into my heart and pulled out two little boxes

Called “hope” and “compassion.”

I desire to keep them open all year long.
